29/6/12 Hi Group 27, I have uploaded the powerpoint presentation and have added our names. We can change the colour and background later on if you want too. Thinking we should all use different colours so we can distinguish who says what. Maybe we could start a discussion on which school we'd like to choose. Ideas could be:
SCHOOL - Wallacia Primary School....Priority Health Area - Injury Prevention & Control (Drowning)...... JUSTIFICATION - Small rural town approx an hour from the beaches and therefore there are many swimming pools in the area (OR WE CAN CHOOSE A SCHOOL NEAR A BEACH) 'Near-drowning and drowning are major causes of injury and death in early childhood (a stage at which a child is unable to swim and unable to recognise the dangers of water)' (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare - http://www.aihw.gov.au/injury-prevention-and-control-health-priority-area/)
SCHOOL - Blackett Public School.... Priority Health Area - Injury Prevention & Control (poor nutrition)..... JUSTIFICATION - Extremely low socio-economic area - this school is a part of the National Partnership Program for Low Socioeconomic Schools. Poor nutrition from students not eating properly - no breakfast and no lunch. Parents neglecting children. (A friend of mine worked at this school and she may be able to help with some advise)
OR we could pick a school and choose 'Obesity' for our priority health area due to the below statement from NSW Health from http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/publichealth/healthpromotion/obesity/ (THIS WOULD BE QUITE A GOOD ONE AS THERE IS LOADS OF INFO AND TONNES OF IDEAS TO HELP THIS PROBLEM) 'Overweight and obesity is a serious, chronic medical condition, which is associated with a wide range of debilitating and life threatening conditions. Large increases in obesity rates among Australians have the potential to erode many recent health gains. In 2009, the NSW Population Health Survey showed that 52.5% of the population was classified as overweight or obese. A significantly higher proportion of males (59.5%) than females (45.4%) were overweight or obese. Rates of childhood overweight and obesity have also been increasing in recent years. NSW Schools Physical Activity and Nutrition Survey (SPANS) data from 2004 show that 25% of boys and 23.3% of girls in NSW were either overweight or obese. This represents a significant increase over the last decade. 2010 SPANS data will be released shortly. Childhood obesity is a serious concern because obese children have a greatly increased likelihood of becoming obese adults. Obese adults who were overweight as children also have higher levels of weight-related morbidity, and a higher risk of preventable mortality, than those obese adults who only became obese in adulthood.' Cheers, Tammy
Hi Group 27,
Loving what you have done here Tammy. Great suggestions! I think that maybe looking for a school that we can focus on regarding obesity might be a good option. I think obesity is one of those issues that is grabbing high media attention and is quite universal across NSW (my general thoughts speaking here. I have no facts to back up my opinion :D ). I'm thinking that since we are a group of students that are quite spread out this health area is probably the one that will be most beneficial regardless of where we end up teaching. still haven't had a chance to check out the assignment properly yet (sorry guys, been having a few personal issues flying around this week) but will definitely do that this week asap.
Again, great start Tammy and i can't wait to hear from the rest of us:) Cheers, Melina
1/7/12 Thinking about what you said Melina and I also think obesity may the way to go. This is a wide spread issue and effects all schools. Thinking Penrith South Public School may be a good option as I just found this quote in the Penrith City Council website (which Penrith South falls under)....'Physical activity levels and obesity remain a challenge within the Penrith region. Based on information from the NSW Health Population Health Survey (2009) approximately 52% of persons in the Sydney West Area undertake adequate physical activity, whilst 58% of the population is classified as overweight or obese (higher than the NSW average of 50%)'. http://www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/sustainability/Indicator-PC16-2011.aspMy friend is a teacher at Penrith South Public School so I can find out any information needed. This school also caters for many children that are in foster care/shelters and is a low socio-economic area. It is also within the main town and amongst many restaurants and junk food outlets. A good website about managing childrens weight is http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/wellbeing/fitness/managing-your-childs-weight
Cheers, Tammy
Hi Tammy and Melina, I'm loving these ideas! This is just a quick message to discuss where the other group members are and what time we will talk together to complete what is due tomorrow. Jess
Hello group 27, I think the obesity is a great idea!! It is defiantly a very large issue within schools today and there would be loads of information on it. I am not fussed on which school we choose. Penrith South Public school sounds like a great idea Tammy. Especially after finding that quote, I think we could defiantly work with that, and even better that you have a friend there! That could always come in handy!
Georgie
Hi All,
Don't have computer access tonight or tomorrow but i do have an hour lunch break. If you require me to do anything just list what you need and i can do that tomorrow lunch if that isn't leaving it too late. Sorry about that guys!
Fantastic sites Tammy. You are such a valuable member of our team!!!! I am happy enough to go with a school in Penrith. I've read through a number of school annual reports in the penrith district and Castlereagh Public School has a live life well @ school program which looks very interesting. They were the only school of about 10 that included anything like this in their report. The others only included sport successes. Anyway check it out at this website:
As I've said previously I am not attached to any one school and so I'm happy to go with the majority but I do think we should focus on a school that deals with obesity. Anyways I hope this helps out. Sorry again i can't assist tonight. If you need anything else from me I can do that tomorrow lunchtime or else Jess could facebook message me cos I think i can get that on my phone.
Cheers and I'll talk next time im internetted up :)

3/7/12 Hi Ladies, With the majority happy with using wiki and Penrith South Public School as our option, I have submitted our survey on the homepage. Questions that were asked were which school we chose, form of communication and our group number. Hope everyone is happy with this but felt we needed to get moving. Thanks, Tammy
3/7/12 6pm Hi All, I'm with Melina, I am not attached to anything in particular at all. Penrith sounds like a wonderful idea. Tammy thanks for submitting that! Tammy do you use Facebook at all? Sometimes its handy to have another group communication tool just as a reminder of what needs to be done. Also, does anyone know how to use this page without having to go through the whole conversation to edit and add. Or is that just the way a wiki works? Can't say I have ever used it before. Also, where is Stephanie??? Jess :D
Hya Jess, I do have facebook, you can find me under Tammy Lloyd. I'll try and find you too. We can make different pages up for each section we are looking at. This way we don't need to rehash on older posts. I have made a context analysis page up which is in the menu on the right hand side. Once we collaborate our coxtent analysis we could put it there and then discuss it there. I'm not sure where Stephanie or Tanya are? They haven't touched base for a while. Group work is so hard, making sure everyone puts a joint and balanced effort in. We are just leaving it fine with this first task for the assessment which is why I'm trying to get something on paper. Will be online tonight and will keep checking for any posts. Gotta go get my three boys in bed so I have some sanity to get my uni hat on again... Crazy life we are all living!!!!!
Hi Tammy, had a look for you but couldn't find you online. This link should get you to mine. I'm just going to have another read over the assignment. I'm guessing it will just be you and me online tonight. Hope the boys aren't being to mischevious tonight and we can chat on this. I'll have a little explore of the wiki a little more too. I'll be online so I'm free to chat whenever you are (and once I get my head around it a little more!) Hopefully Stephanie and Tanya will be able to get on here shortly :D
I'm back Jess, boys were definitely on fire tonight. Going to give the context analysis a go tonight. Will post when I have something. I remember there is an example of one which may help to guide us. Will go find it....
Yep, I'm looking at it at the moment. I WILL NOW POST ANYTHING ABOUT THE CONTEXT ANALYSIS on that page. See you there! Jess :D
Tried finding you on facebook but no luck.. What are you under? I search your name and UNE. What photo is on the front. I have one of me and my hubby in the water at Whitsundays (we were diving). See you in context analysis page...
Hi sorry being school holidays I am finding it very hard to get on the computer enough to get my head around this . But would love to let you know that I am here. I believe we are going with Penrith South Public School. I am still trying to understand the assignment and what we need to do, hopefully I should be up to speed ASAP. Looking forward to working with you Tanya .
Hi again I have added some pages from the Penrith Council with some stats and bits about penrith, they have taken so long to download that I haven't had a good chance to look at it closely but thought they might have some info for us. Tanya
Hi Everyone, Sorry I haven't had access to a computer in the last few days, very impressed we have made some progress. What's next? What you you like me to do? I'm happy doing Penrith it sounds like a good school to do. Georgie
Hi Everyone, Context Analysis is done and will be updated in our powerpoint presentation in the files and folders as EDPE346-Group 27-3. I just completed the slides but will do the audio tomorrow night. We are now working on our Focus Area which you will see a page for it in the right hand side menu. Please contribute information about our focus area - childhood obesity. We will need to pull together so we have a balanced and equal input from all group members. Thanks Tammy..... P.S. Please let me know if you would like any changes to the context analysis powerpoint slide....
Hi Everyone, Jess and I have been researching obesity statistics this afternoon, we have added 2 new document which will eventually end up in the slide show. Have a look at them and we will post changes to the powerpoint shortly, if you guys approve we will do the transcript. Georgie and Jess :)
My internet is back up to speed, I can finally watch the lectures and hopefully get a better grasp on what we are doing because at the moment it is as clear as mud. I have no children tomorrow ( which is the first 24 hour period I have been childless for about 7 months) So I am hoping to get into this tomorrow, so if you have anything in particular you would like me to do, research, or what ever let me know, I have not plans on wasting my day resting have 24 hours to catch up and get ahead with Uni.
